The True American Hero is one who serves his or her country.
Despite the fact that war is not always an easy decision.
Because they have chosen honor and duty for their country.
To serve in times of war and to uphold the precepts of peace.
They are the sons and daughters of “one nation under God.”
Leaving everything behind and we the families are proud of their commitment.
The colors they stand for.
One of red… For the blood that has been shed by those who valiantly defend America.
One of white… Symbolizing hope that one day our world will know peace.
Finally one of blue… For the courage to serve our nation when called upon.
May God’s speed keep vigil.
Until you are safely back in Liberty’s arms once again.

I wrote this poem on Christmas Eve in 2010 after an email from my sister who was in Iraq. In place that was supposed to be the “Green Zone.” Wishing her a Merry Christmas, but knowing it was not so merry. So on this day when our freedoms have been paid for by our armed forces for 247 years. Please thank God, thank our military men and women who are currently serving, along with our veterans. As well as those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of the United States of America.
