Eggs and Mega Millions

Ah, the joys of my December baking season.

Several dozen eggs, no problem.

Sale upon sale for the chicken’s finest.

Mixing, baking and decorating.

Goodies from our culinary heritage.

To set upon platters for Christmas treats.

January came, to my grocery list horror.

A dozen eggs past the cost of six dollars.

Evening news anchors reporting stories of bakeries and bagel shops raising prices of our favorite delights.

Newspaper cartoons giving some poets ideas of protest.

Because poets are never bored to lightheartedly voice their opinion.

Guessing our favorite Sunday stop will have to be one less dozen.

Investing in a Mega Millions ticket or two.

So hopefully, I can afford to pay for a dozen of eggs or two.

I could not pass up the opportunity to write a poem to protest the price of eggs after seeing Jeff Stahler’s cartoon in the newspaper last week

  1. You are not alone. The price of food has sky rocketed here too with a simple pack of butter over twice the price it was; also up there is the hike in price of imported food from warmer countries.
Couple that with our energy bills that have more than doubled because of the war in Europe and the mind boggles and the heart sinks at how ordinary people are expected to live.
The choice between heating the home and feeding the family has become a reality for so many people in the UK. My heart goes out to them.

    • Sue,it is just not right for everyone to be struggling like this. Especially Europe over this war. We are expanding our garden this year and I will certainly be canning more food products. It is certainly hard for the elderly. I hear this with our older patients before they discharge to home. Thank God our local area on the aging has programs to ease their burdens.
