Monday Evening Fishing

It has become a family ritual for the past few Monday evenings to go fishing at our favorite watering hole. But tonight after dinner my husband and I were beat from a busy weekend and of course work. Our son insisted that we go fishing. After some bauks by my husband,”I am tired out.” Our son reminded us that once he graduates from high school on Thursday. He will have no time for anything between working most of the summer and getting ready for college. A lot of our family outings will very short.

My husband and I packed up the fishing gear and headed out. Our tiredness soon faded away as we pulled the car near the reservoir. Smells of fresh cut grass and the beauty of the surrounding area is always a small vacation to me. The sun was just inching over the trees to evening twilight. This is the best time for fishing, no crowds just you and nature. First on deck my husband caught a nice sized bass. We usually catch and release our prizes. I usually catch lake week or small twigs on my line.

I started to think of my son and how he has turned to a fine young man. With his graduation this week I know he is missing his grandparents. That they will not be there physically but they will certainly be there in spirit. No sooner as those thoughts were entertaining my brain. Bob had a big tug on his line, lo and behold there was a large mouth bass on his line. He was elated. “Mom!” “Dad!” “This is the biggest fish I ever caught, thank you for taking me tonight.” My heart just melted. We wouldn’t never had this experience crashed out on the couch. Just then my line had a slight tug on it. I pulled the fishing pole at an angle to the right. This baby sunny at the end of line. I started squealing like a six year old. “My first fish, my first fish and no more lake weed for me.”

By that time only one night crawler remained in the Styrofoam container. My husband took it and within minutes he caught a small sunny. The evening had turned into night fall. Across the water it seemed like thousands of bubbles were making their way to and fro in a synchronized dance. A beautiful sight to see. We packed up our gear and headed home. The drive home was full of stories and the anticipation of graduation on Thursday evening. My husband reached out for my hand to hold. He stated, “Mom we did good tonight, we did so very good tonight.” Yes, the busyness of this world can wear us down. But the memories we creat will last for a lifetime.
